On a wet, muddy day in Ballina on a pitch that walking on was tough, never mind playing rugby, this Mayo derby produced a dog fight til the end.
Ill-discipline on both sides was to the fore as numerous penalties were conceded by both, Ballina been pinged more often. Conditions led to many handling errors on the day. Penalties cost the home side Aiden McNulty in the 1st half and Tom Toolan in the second, the loss of Toolan in the second gave Westport a major advantage in the scrum.
In between those cards Westport lost ex-Ballina man Niall O’Malley to the bin. Lyndon Jones kicked the points for Westport whilst Sam Johnson scored Ballina’s.
Kicking conditions were poor at best which led to Jones missing a few other kickable penalties. The ref had a tough day but was consistent with decisions for the best part. On the day, Westport edged out the battle between the packs which gave them the victory.
