Knocket:Sligo 2nds V Carrick on Shannon

A good tough match in Strandhill. Sligo started strongest and looked like they would run Carrick ragged early on. The Leitrim lads settled into it well though and began to give as good as they got! Both sides were willing to shift it wide when possible but the strong breeze and freezing rain made it difficult! Traded penalties made it 3-3 after 20 minutes. Carrick were first to cross the whitewash. Sligo took a quick lineout in their own 22 and put themselves into trouble! Carrick eventually turned them over and drove over for the opening try! 3-10 at half time!
Sligo used the breeze well in the second half and clawed their way back to within a point with a couple of well struck penalties. Sligo picked up the match winning score with 15 minutes left. A right to left back line move put the right winger in space and although he cut back in with the line at his mercy he off-loaded well to the centre who dived in in the corner. Conversion made it 16-10.
Good entertainment all round, even had a dust up between 2 of the second rows with 10 minutes left. Yellow card for each!
Have to compliment referee Mc Elwee on a job well done!

  1. Carrick are heading in the right direction and are a well organised outfit. Hope to see them get a few more players.
