Towns Seconds Cup Wrap

Newbridge 2nds

The Provincial Towns Seconds Cup is up and running and Sunday’s ties had some nail bitting finishes with North Meath and Dundalk producing surprise results.

Dundalk edged Tullow 12-9 at home which would hardly be a major upset but was a slight surprise as it was Tullow’s first competitive loss of the season.

North Meath had to withstand a late fightback in tough conditions at home to Cill Dara but pulled through for a second round spot.
Tullamore and Newbridge both secured away wins as expected with the former needing two second half penalties to sneak past Kilkenny.

Tough conditions were the order of the day with Carlow out doing Portlaoise 6-3 and Midland Warriors coming through a tight tussle with Gorey 8-0 to keep their Cup hopes alive.

Clondalkin and Enniscorthy both produced excellent away performances today. Clondalkin edged Mullingar 30-16 in one of the few high scoring encounters and Scorthy had to work very hard to overcome Wicklow 22-18.

  1. wrecking ball says:

    any scores from matches today?

  2. ouch my groin says:

Enniscorthy won 22 ~ 18 good game, enniscorthy were dominated for the first 15 until they brought on two players, it must be nice not to have players cup tied. It was still a very even affair and a great game to watch.

    • Biffo says:

Wicklow don’t have any players Cup tied. Their 1st XV are still in the Cup.

      • Cheeseontoast says:

I thought if a player started in the 1sts towns cup they were cup tied for 2nds,so technically enniscorthy wouldn’t have any players cup tied?not saying they used any because I have no idea but Wicklow would have 15 players unavailable because of their involvement against skerries last week? Or am I on completely wrong track??

    • bridgeman says:

If a player starts a certain number of games for the first team in leinster league they are also ineligible for 2nds cup as far as I know…..not sure how many games 4 i think? If your suggestion is that a club could put its 1st team out in 2nds cup as they had a bye in Towns Cup this would rule this out….

      • mr bojangles says:

the rule is that if a player starts 6 games in LL at 1sts level he cannot play 2nds towns cup unless he gets re-graded. area league or all ireland cup matches do not count so have no bearing.

a player who is eligible to start for the 2nds in 2nds towns cup can have played for for the 1st team in the towns cup the previous wkend, provided they won this match. (the argument is that the player could be dropped from 1sts)
if the 1sts lose then no player who started this game would be eligible for 2nds in 2nds towns cup.

      • Leinster Boy says:

According to the Leinster Branch, a player cannot play seconds cup if they have started in any cup First XV cup game. This is a silly rule as it give’s a distinct advantage to teams who received a bye into the second round of the cup.

      • Biffo says:

        Leinster Boy you are misinformed.

  3. Colm Harpur says:

Carlow win 6-3 in a very scrappy game…

  4. Question says:

Big advantage today for teams in seconds Cup whose 1st teams haven’t been out in towns cup yet. Our team missing two genuine seconds players all year because they played first team towns cup last weekend. Something for the Branch to look at?

  5. Windy City says:

Birr 23 - 0 West Offaly Lions Riverside
Co Carlow 6 - 3 Portlaoise Oak Park
    Dundalk 12 - 9 Tullow Mill Rd
    Kilkenny 0 - 6 Tullamore Foulkstown
Midland Warriors 8 - 0 Gorey The Showgrounds Moate
    Mullingar 16 - 30 Clondalkin Cullion
North Kildare 5 - 53 Newbridge The Maws Kilcock
North Meath 15 - 10 Cill Dara The Grange Kells
    Wicklow 18 - 22 Enniscorthy Ashtown Lane

Some v interesting results. The mighty tullow bow out with a whimper
Newbridge result was telling, north Meath and Tullamore also produced the goods. Great competition

    • mr bojangles says:

just shows the difference between 1a and 1b, tullow were expected to walk this game against a dundalk side that have struggled all season. they have been telling everyone near the black gates how they were going to do the league and cup double at 1sts and 2nds level this season!! this should be a massive wake up call for their invincible 1st team: you arent as good as you think

      • soup dragon says:

Bojangles full of it again im from scorthy and we meet tullow every year at number of times at different levels and I can guarantee they wouldnt be talking shit like that, good rugby men honest n hard. That sort of manure seems to be unique to kildare clubs! And you in particular!

Ps not the first time tullow 2nds were bet this year!

      • mr bojangles says:

whatever soup dragon! tullow won a facile title in an average league big deal. if malahide or kilkenny were in 1b they would have beaten tullow. the crash bash negative munster style rugby rugby tullow play will only get you so far, they will get an awful fall from grace next year in 1a when the likes of wanderers put 60 points on them and also in the latter stages of the TC this year

      • blackpan says:

Who were you talking to ? mr bj…sounds like you like stirring it. Not Tullows form to talk shite, we do our talking on the field !!!

      • blackpan says:

Who were you talking to ? mr bj…sounds like you like stirring it.

  6. Kev from cappincur says:

Another notch in eddies belt, masterminded 2nds win in dreadful conditions apparently. Low scoring but high in endeavour. Ill drink a carlsberg in your honour. Even dusted off the boots. 6 nil never sounded as good. Over an out from London

  7. the rock says:

Bojangles I don’t know who you have been talking to around tullow but we wouldn’t be that cocky to predict a double double the players aren’t behaving like that anyway and the first team will let future results speak for themselves nice little snipe though not your first one at tullow either

  8. Biffo says:

Question, the two players your talking about could have played 2nds towns cup provided; 1 Your 1sts won last week and 2 the players in question have started 5 or less league matches for your 1sts.

  9. Kr068 says:

How are tallow going to face a big fall at end of this years towns cup they got to the final last year by beating 1a sides.they have Kilkenny in next round who are in 2a and got to quarter finals of towns cup last year and only lost by 5 points to newbridge Kilkenny were not half as good then as they are now so they would probably beat newbridge now!!!!!

  10. macdaddy says:

Kilkenny are by far the best team in the country! Because they are so good the IRFU are being putting them straight up to UBL 1A at the end of the season….they are by far the most consistently wonderful amazing rugby team this country as ever seen……Well done , I hope you choke on your success!!!!!

  11. ah_lart says:

Its Cup rugby now men, league results etc mean nothing. Mr bojangles and soup dragon I suggest you let whats done on the pitch do the talking leaving aside your peanutting and petty gripes

  12. Kr068 says:

Ah ye macaddy real f***ing smooth I just trying to tell you that there isn’t that big difference between 2A and 1A.I’m not even from Kilkenny I’m from tullamore and was in kilkenny yesterday at seconds towns cup and there seconds are very impressive lacking in experience are seconds are very experienced

  13. macdaddy says:

look do you not get how ridiculous your statement is that there is no difference between 1A and 2A. Been up here for the last few months people posting how great KK and Malahide are!!! It’s 2A these teams are there for a reason, Yes they might be on the up but you can’t say that there is no difference in the standard week in week out in the above leagues!!! The next round of the TC will tell more about the standard of the division when 3 Teams from 2A will be in action against the 1B Champions, 1A Champions and the relegation/play off place in 1A. I have nothing against these clubs but just hate all the crap that gets built up here!! There will be only 1 2A team in the quarter final and that will be Roscrea……

    • mr bojangles says:

the fact is that for various reasons, this year carlow and ashbourne are struggling badly in 1b. they would probably struggle in 2a too.

malahide and kilkenny and even gorey would do well in 1b this year as they are all better sides than carlow, ashbourne, longford and wicklow and would all finish in the top 5 if they were there.

the reality is there is never much difference between 1b and 2a teams as most teams in these leagues dont have huge resources or playing bases so it is usually a cyclical thing where they have a bunch of players at one time and are good for 2-3 years, then players retire, move on etc and they have to rebuild. some of their better players will invariably move to the bigger clubs in 1a or even to the ail.

the big gap is between 1b and 1a. look at cill dara, last year they were top of 1b and this year struggled in 1a

  14. Kev from cappincur says:

fair play to the lads yest in kkenny, they ground it out in bad weather

  15. Kick in the stones says:

Carlow were very week at the start of the year but have come good as of late. Ashbourne on their day are a good team as well, while Longford and Portarlington are struggling for players.
Wicklow, Clondalkin, Monkstown and Tullow would run rings around any 2a team. Malahide and Kilkenny might put up a good showing but at the end of the day there is too much strength in dept in these 1b clubs. The difference between 1b and 1a is a similar margin. 1B teams taking on 1A teams have to be on the top of their games to compete.

  16. Honest Mick says:

Am I missing something here? Monkstown would run rings around any 2A side, while Longford would struggle. From memory Longford have taken 9 points from Monkstown this season. In fairness, based on history and tradition, you may be correct but, in terms of the here and now, your information is incorrect.

    • Kick in the stones says:

You could be right about Monkstown, something has gone amiss in their club and they probable fall into the Portarlington Longford 2nds bracket on current form.

      • mr bojangles says:

how does a club like monkstown who were a senior club for many years and have a strong base of feeder players from cbc monkstown plus the surrounding area end up in 1b?
the club doesnt seem that bothered by it at all with very little local interest. if they keep going the way they are they will just fade away

  17. Innocent says:

Anyone know when the next round of this competition is on? What with the Towns Cup coming up and the internationals I’m guessing its a few weeks away.

    • mr bojangles says:

next free wkend wont be until 9th march as far as i can see anyway..

      • Innocent says:

That weekend is not free Bojangles. Every division excluding 1A are playing their final league games that weekend. Looks like it will be a long wait for round 2. I thought the 24th Feb was free but 1A have games that weekend.

  18. sicknote says:

Their are 3 teams from Div 2a that would probably survive in Div 1b,Kilkenny,Malahide,Gorey.Not saying they would win it but they would be able to take a few scalps. The above teams 2nds are very good sides and that normally gives a good indication of where their 1st XV are at.Kilkenny could have beaten Tullamore at the weekend.Prediction of +18 was way off the mark.Gorey had to travel a long way to play a 1st XV and only lost by 2 scores.

  19. Digger says:

A long wait till round 2 prob the week after Paddys Day then theyll try to squeeze it and the rest of the cups in before the end of April, a very small window, the scheduling is an absolute joke.

    • mr bojangles says:

last year there was towns cup on paddys wkend anyway.
id agree the scheduling is a joke. last year we had no game for 3 weeks then a 2nds towns cup q final! i remember one season when the 2nds towns cup final wasnt played until 6th may!

i think kilkenny will run tullow very close, there wont be any more than a score in it

  20. unaffiliated says:

some good results in round one, not very manny surprises really but a number of good games by all or at least most accounts! The next round will tell a lot, Tullamore, Carlow Enniscorthy and Roscrea all take on 1st xv sides all be it from lower divisions! Anybody god any info on the standing of Midland warriors Swords Birr or north meath in there respective leagues?

  21. Innocent says:

I assume they wont put any games on Paddys Day. I have been eyeing that up for a while as a long weekend off!

  22. Steve says:

Paddy weekend is quarter final of towns cup.

  23. Seaox says:

Malahide scored 5 tries against monks town in the spencer cup and walked away comfortable enough despite their forwards being a little bit stronger. At a time when the malahide side were all over the place selection wise and pattern wise. Spoof saying monkstown would dominate 2a. There is a gap between the 1a and 2a no doubt but malahide having a look at results and depth that malahide and Kilkenny have they will last and progress to 1a no problem.

    • mullydoon says:

Anyone know the format for the the ail round robins? Tullamore, Monivea, Richmond,Clogher Valley, Malahide and Kilkenny, some cracking teams in it!

      • JQP says:

mully, stop being all insecure man.. no ones saying either are 1a yet, but i certainly believe either are top half 1b, look where portarlinton are.. Gorey beating dundalk, malahide having dispatched M’town handy enough early season.. KK will do really well v tullow mark these words, ive been around junior rugby for 20 years.. a good LL side is a good LL side period.. the top 4 in LL 2a are a bunch of good sides competing at the same time.. theyre all in reality 1b standard.. dont be fooled by the 2a status (which in fairness is usually a fair indicator) .. i think all we are saying is that 2a was very good, and v competitive this year, im not convinced of same for 1b.. sure we will just see in time anyway, its all speculation, but not get the auld knickers in a twist, the clubs in 1b/1a are there by merit till other clubs below finally say prove otherwise by results..

  24. UNO says:

Don’t think tullamore are in it, think they have gone straight up due to the fact they are the best team off all time

  25. blackpan says:

Tullow v Kilkenny should be a great game but i think tullow by more than 1 score…..but then again Cup Rugby throws form out the window !!
