Spencer Cup Final
Coolmine 28
Malahide 14
A surge of scores in the final twenty minutes helpd Coolmine retain the Spencer Cup on Saturday at a wet Ashbrook against a spirited Malahide.
The side from two divisions below the champions really did produce a stirring effort to cause the upset and led 14-13 on the hour mark but couldn’t contain the hosts in the closing stages.
Coolmine’s crown as the Metro’s Junuir Cup champions is a satisfying one after a tough season and their focus will now be on the Metro Cup.
For Malahide, the game acted as a useful test ahead of the final few rounds in their bid for the Division 2a title.

As a coolmine man I have to give full plaudits to a really gallant and excellently drilled malahide side
To my mind the score does not reflect the game that we witnessed nor the closeness that was present throughout a fairly gripping encounter.
With 12 minutes to go ,at 21 – 14 down and camped on the coolmine line malahide were in touching distance of the try line and were camped there for a while
Wrong option taking and rushed thinking allowed us to lift the siege and move to the far end for the games clinching score.
For coolmine a nice days work with the j 2 Byrne cup being wrapped up in the days opening fixture on a ten points to five shoreline. This represents the double double at this level as both cups were also claimed last year.
For malahide an example of how tough it can be to win the spencer cup but they can take great solace from how close they came .
For coolmine two pennants and new adornment for the ash rook walls . However it is becomming more and more obvious that we have to bolster our pack over the coming off season .
To be pushed around like this by a side two leagues lower is an indication of where our real Achilles heel lies .
Great in the loose we really need a harder ,sharper and enforcing presence in the pack .urgently if we are to challenge for the league seriously next year.
This club needs to take the next step and move to senior level.
The base is solid with a phenomenally strong mini rugby section and a great nucleus of feeder schools which a senior club wou,d be able to attract back post senior cup duty.
The time to act is now.enough prevarication.lets make the next move upwards and give the area ,the players and the geography the senior club it deserves..
Give the geography the senior club it deserves?
Sounds ridiculous, please explain.
Coolmine Has the players it deserves and coaches but maybe not the supporters if anything like Jumbo! What is he trying to say. He is ridiculous indeed! Totally incoherent. Debbie
What! Don’t bother explaining, anyone can see these comments come from some kind of resentment or grudge! Get a grip and enjoy the win and honour. Hank
fair play to coolmine for seeing the game out. Their 10 / 15 are exceptional tbf. I guess this is just a rally cry from whomever there for coolmine to push on again into the senior leagues. Im not sure about the geography thing though, its near enough to castleknock, but not that near.. it always seemed to me to be more or less on the m50.. anyways, decent set up alright. Could do it for sure. Again, this fixture and other recent results illustrate exactly where the top few sides in 2a are. The fact this was a home fixture for coolmine would have been a significant adv. Ill be watching tullow and KK in the next round of the towns altough i suspect tullow are possibly better than coolmine..
no resentment
no grudge whatsoever.
i was present on Saturday and many more saturday ,sundays and in my days tuesday and thursday nights for decades.
Merely stating a fact .
This club needs to be making a push for senior .
fact .
if a 2a club can come here and push us around up front as they did …… surely it tells a story as to where our weakness is
talk to the clubs who play us …thats where they target .
The geography is referencing the geographical size of our hinterland in Coolmine ….which is huge.
No significant encroachment of other clubs on our doorsteps.
We have a vast catchment area and one willing to support a push for senior.
I dont see incoherence in there Debbie.
merely an earnest desire that we stop being a mid table Junior team (as we have been for decades)
and push on to become senior.
Perhaps that is an incoherent wish to others ,however surely we play the game to progress,to ensure aits at the highest level possible and ensure the thousands(yes thousands) of kids who have passed through the mini section have no reason to move to town for senior rugby.
Let Coolmine give it to them
